Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Valorisation
Knowledge transfer is a term used to encompass a very broad range of activities to support mutually beneficial collaborations between universities, businesses and the public sector. Discussion around KT often focuses on the formation of spin-out businesses or the licensing of intellectual property (IP) based on the outputs of university science and technology-related research. Although these are vitally important areas, KT actually encompasses a much broader range of activities and is not limited to the science and technology disciplines. In Western Balkan, where R&D capacities have been greatly affected by brain drain and underinvestment in research, where technology transfer activities are still scarce and collaboration with industry tends to be driven by occasional opportunities rather than by strategic, long term partnerships - the need for a strategic approach to knowledge transfer in order to improve the science and innovation systems in WB is obvious. In other words, knowledge of how to cover the entire chain from research to the market should be facilitated. In this regard, some relevant activities are currently ongoing in the region.
Knowledge valorisation is the process of creating social and economic value from knowledge by linking different areas and sectors and by transforming data, know-how and research results into sustainable products, services, solutions and knowledge-based policies that benefit society. It's the aim to maximise the transformation of research and innovation results into solutions - e.g. through intellectual asset management or standardisation.
