04. The project of the month July 2012: Supporting Common RTD actions in WBCs for developing Low Cost and Low Risk ICT based solutions for TPPs Energy Efficiency increasing (WBalkICT)

The "Project of the month" - July 2012

WBalkICT is a twenty four month EU-funded research project that aims to propose intelligent and performant systems in an interdisciplinary approach, integrated in different System Structures, mainly from Artificial Intelligence System category, dedicated to monitor, control and optimize the technological processes from TPPs using fossil fuels.

Background

West Balkan(WB) region is a heterogeneous area. Specifically, in terms of energy there isn’t one common power grid and there are different National behavior of energy consumption. The WestBalkan Region should become effectively part of the EU Energy Market, using two mechanisms:

  • the power producers and energy consumers must be confident on the market mechanism, by establishing and implementing independent energy market transactions mechanism;
  • to make the energy production and consumption more efficient.

The EC Directive on Energy Efficiency (2006/32/EC) provides a good framework for strengthening European wide co-operation on energy efficiency. In EC “Action Plan for Energy Efficiency” – SEC (2506) 1073, EC underlined that opportunities offered by Information and Communication technologies play a crucial role in large energy and environmental benefits, including GHGs effect mitigation needed under the Kyoto Protocol by 2012.
The main focus of the proposal is for WBCs Thermal Power Plants using fossil fuels, with high contributions to energy losses, noxious emissions, including GHGs. The present energy utilization in WBCs is practically far behind the EU countries, due to a lot of causes, highlighted in “Background and state of the art” section. The project proposal initiates a strong JERPs scientific cooperation, with innovative approaches, high scientific level, in order to correlate in an optimal form, using ITC last generation solutions, the procedures and techniques from fossil fuels burning processes thermodynamics, mathematical modeling, modern methods of flue gases analysis, combustion control.
The project proposes intelligent and performant low cost ICT based systems, in an interdisciplinary approach, integrated in different system structures, mainly from Artificial Intelligence category, dedicated to monitor, control and optimize the technological processes from TPPs using fossil fuels.

WBalkICT participation at the Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, September 25-29, 2011 (see also related event link below for futher information)

During  2011 Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, WBalkICT consortium partners have organised two WBalkICT events:

  • a. WBalkICT 2nd Project Committe Meeting;
  • b. WBalkICT special Event.

During WBalkICT Special Event, it were presented two scientific papers („Improvement of Environmental Aspects of Thermal Power Plant Operation by Advanced Control Concepts”; „Expert System for Training of West Balkans TPPs Operators in Balkan Lignite Efficiency Burning”) directly connected with consortium conception reffering to project logistic and development and other 4 scientific papers, complentary with WBalkICT scope and objectives reffering to important problems in Western Balkans TPPs operating (Energy Efficiency, Noxious Emmisions, GHGs effect, Balkan lignite cofiring, etc).
