News archive - Call for Applications: UNESCO Travel Grants for 12th International Public Communication of Science and Technology Conference (PCST 2012)

After PCST 2010 in New Delhi, the 12th international public communication of science and technology conference titled “Quality, Honesty and Beauty in science and technology communication” will be held in Florence, Italy, from 18-20 April 2012. The programme will include themes such as: What does quality mean in science communication? Evaluating public communication of science; Art and/in science communication; Two decades of academic publishing in PCST; Ethics and aesthetics of science communication; Communicating the social sciences; Reflexive challenges: communicating PCST?; Emerging trends and issues in science communication; Changing media, changing formats, changing science communication models?; Public communication of technology: the ‘Cinderella’ of PCST? UNESCO will support 8 young science journalists and science communicators (PhDs, post-docs) below the age of 35, with citizenship and residence corresponding to one of the eligible countries (including all WBC). UNESCO travel grants will cover conference registration fees and some funds to be used for travel and accommodation. Deadline: 30 September 2011

Purpose To improve capacity and international contacts among young scientific journalists from South-Eastern European countries supporting their participation to the 12th International Public Communication of Science and Technology Conference (PCST 2012); to promote the networking of science communicators within South-East Europe (SEE) and share best practices; and to improve the quality of communication in science and technology in the SEE region as an overall objective of the initiative.

Eligible countries Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Kosovo/UN Resolution 1244, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey.

Application Interested applicants should send their curriculum vitae and a motivation letter related to the quality of science communication in the South-East European Region, (in PDF format) to the UNESCO Venice Office (attention: Ms Rosanna Santesso; email: r.santesso(at)unesco.org) by 30 September 2011.
