I would like to express the interest of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) of Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvia, to join any TEMPUS IV Joint Project within theme “Higher Education and Society (HES)” related to ICT in education for priorities:
– Training of non-university teachers
or
– Development of lifelong learning in society at large.
Brief profile of RTU and FCSIT.
RTU is an accredited, internationally recognized European level university offering high-class academic and professional study programmes.
Our principal goal is to provide the Latvian national economy with qualified human resources for its stable growth and development. We work with our students sharing our knowledge, skills and experience as well as try to communicate to them also the spirit of zealous search for the new – the spirit of investigation, the desire to stretch their minds, invent and innovate.
RTU is the only many branched technical university in Latvia. At the moment there are more than 17 000 students, including:
- 400 Doctoral degree students
- 3200 Master`s degree students
- 10000 Bachelor`s degree students
- 1400 Academic personnel
FCSIT trains specialists for work in various sub-branches of computer science and information technology, as well as in the sectors developing new information systems and information technology solutions or using computer-assisted information technology solutions. In the 21st century it is difficult to imagine our life without information technologies, therefore FCSIT specialists are required by almost every branch of human activity: management, economy, finance, power engineering, chemistry, physics, medicine, education, science, automated design and production processes, tourism, journalism, music and art.

By ensuring updated, high-class, internationally accredited study programmes at all study levels FCSIT offers its graduates a possibility to develop their careers in interesting, prestigious and well-paid professions. Three most popular professions among FCSIT graduates are: programming engineer, system analyst and information technology project manager. 

SET OF E-LEARNING-RELATED PROJECTS

Within the period from 2003 till 2008 the research group from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology of Riga Technical University, Latvia  (hereinafter referred as RTU) has carried out a set of projects related to implementation of distance eLearning to different target groups.
 
–        Self initiative
           –   implementation of further education of rural teachers of Informatics via Internet
           –   recognized by Ministry of Education and Science as legal post-graduate training
           –   tools used: ScreenFlash, Blackboard
           –   different modes of teaching materials delivery
–        Co-funded by European Social Fund
           –   Fostering of learning process of disabled youth

                    –   attempts of video-teaching materials perfection
           –   Further education of Latvian province teachers of informatics

                   –    establishing of human-technological environment for organisational provision of online course
                   –    development and implementation of online course related to the basics of “eLearning/eTeaching”
