Known worldwide for their historic city centres, the CIVITAS RENAISSANCE cities are blessed with large numbers of visitors. Tourism itself is a key driver of the European economy accounting for 4 percent of the EU’s GDP. However, the demand on the transport system through seasonal tourism exacerbates the problem that the transport systems of historic cities typically face. They need to serve central urban areas that are characterised by a layout of narrow streets and where public, private and freight transport compete for space. Cities face the challenge to ensure economic vitality and employment, while maintaining a high-quality, safe and environmental-friendly public environment.

The CIVITAS Network includes cities that are part of the co-funded programmes known as CIVITAS I, CIVITAS II and CIVITAS Plus as well as cities who’ve yet to be involved in CIVITAS but which are similarly committed to introducing ambitious, clean urban transport strategies.

FYR of Macedonia

In the light of the current transport situation, Macedonia’s capital has joined CIVITAS RENAISSANCE to benefit from the know-how and best practice of other CIVITAS cities. Skopje is working on a strategy for the development of a sustainable urban transport system with a particular focus on the development of public transport. The quality of the service will be improved through real-time passenger information, and smart ticketing solutions based on an integrated fare system for all public transport services. The public transport fleet will be renewed and converted from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles to reduce pollution.  Additionally, light rail transit will be introduced for a faster and more sustainable service with greater capacity.
