IP for Innovation

The main aim of ip4inno is to increase understanding and usage of intellectual property (IP) by SMEs (which currently lack know-how regarding IP management), with a view to increasing innovation and competitiveness in line with the Lisbon goals. Ip4inno proposes to address this by disseminating across several European countries the most relevant and useful information and training packages on protecting and exploiting IP, and IP management (with the main focus on patents).

Ip4inno is aimed principally at SMEs and their advisers; researchers; and students. Once their specific needs have been verified, information and training resources will be pooled and developed and finally disseminated electronically via a specially designed web portal; and by the delivery of around 10 different seminars to train the trainers. This training will then be disseminated to many end-users in each country as a pilot scheme to get feedback, with a view to improving it. The aim is for the project to continue, develop and expand following the initial 2-year period. A management committee will ensure high-quality standards, which will also be checked via evaluation questionnaires at all levels. A final, independent evaluation report will assess the success of the project and recommend improvements.

The objectives of ip4inno directly contribute to those of the Work Programme, in particular through: setting up the basis of a European innovation system by networking players, promoting cooperation, breaking down barriers and encouraging transnational learning; investigating and testing new approaches, promoting entrepreneurial innovation; and offering services that need to be provided on a European scale. In line with the Specific Programme, ip4inno will improve the knowledge, understanding and capabilities of the actors involved by encouraging more intensive and fruitful interactions between them.
