Responsible research and Innovation Policy Experimentations for Energy Transition
An innovative transformative process toward energy transition
The effective transformation of the European fossil-based energy sector into a zero-carbon one requires the transformation of socio-technical systems and the consideration of the particularities of each territory. The EU-funded RIPEET project aims to bring together regional innovation actors and a broad range of stakeholders from different sectors to co-create and implement common bottom-up solutions for the energy transition.
RIPEET’s objective is to support responsible research and innovation (RRI) policy experimentations for the energy transition in three European territories – Extremadura (ES), the Highlands and Islands of Scotland (UK) and Ostrobothnia (FI). The RIPEET project hereby supports the ambitious objectives of the European Green Deal at regional level as the three European territories will offer real-life settings to test, pilot, and validate RIPEET’s methodology via the Transition Labs. The Transition Labs are the space where the co-creation of transition pathways happens and the bottom-up solutions are developed.
They set up a regional arena for change that shapes a new way of regional R&I governance and give a forum to diverse actors having a stake in the energy transition on a regional level. In the labs, stakeholders come together to co-create common visions based on the potentials and priorities of territorial eco-systems (mapping and visioning), generate transition pathways and innovation needs, launching a call for immediate bottom-up solutions to these (pathways and piloting) and anchor the process on organisational as well as policy level (sustainability and exploitation). The framework conditions, processes, and outcomes of these experiments will be mapped, monitored, and evaluated. This constitutes an evidence-base for the revision of policy mixes, strategies and research and innovation (R&I) instruments as well as for establishing a European RIPEET community. Thereby, RIPEET will support territories in establishing experimental spaces to address the territorial dimensions of the European Green Deal. The consortium consists of 11 renowned and EU-FP-experienced universities, research organisations, SMEs, CSOs, business and innovation centres and regional authorities from seven European countries, with the competencies and territorial anchoring necessary to implement the approach.
What is in it for the Western Balkans?
Do you want to be part of the RIPEET Community and profit from our peer learning programmes which promote mutual learning between the three RIPEET pilot regions and a cohort of six selected European mirror territories? Then you should apply to our call for “Mirror Ecosystems” that is open until the 15th of June 2022.
