Reinforcement of BioSense Center ICT for Sustainability and Eco-Innovation

The vision of BioSense Center is to become an internationally recognized multidisciplinary research centre and a key provider of advanced ICT solutions for acquisition and processing of data for natural resource management.

The main objective of this project is to foster future development of the BioSense Center, based on its 3-year development strategy, the results of the gap analysis of the Centers potential, and the results of the SWOT analysis. The proposal aims to strengthen both the research and innovation capacities of the Center, to support the synergies within, and, in the end, to contribute to the reduction of the brain-drain, advance of the infrastructure (both research and management) and to increase the eco-innovation performance of the Center. The identified strengths of the BioSense Center, combined with the reinforcement activities proposed in this Project, will help in overcoming the identified weaknesses, exploit benefits from recognized opportunities and mitigate the threats.

To achieve so, InnoSense will be implemented through seven strongly interrelated work packages (WP1-WP7) within a period of 42 months, namely: WP1: Management of the Project, WP2: Employment of new experts, WP3: Equipment purchase, WP4: Intellectual Property and Innovation Capacity Building, WP5: Placements and trainings, WP6: Dissemination and networking, and WP7: Ex-post evaluation.

InnoSense is a mono-applicant project. However 20 Institutions (research institutes, private enterprises, governmental institutions etc.) all over Europe are providing endorsement to this proposal and will be actively involved in the implementation of the project and transfer their knowledge and expertise to the BioSense Center.

BioSense Center was established at the University of Novi Sad with the mission to coordinate, focus and advance research in biosensing through introduction and promotion of state-of-the-art ICT solutions in agriculture, ecology, environmental protection and forestry. This is symbolized in the logo of the BioSense Center, where these four major “green” BIO-related fields are represented as petals. The ICT is in the middle and acts as a bond which holds the Center together.

The vision of the BioSense Center is to become an internationally recognized multidisciplinary research center and a key provider of advanced ICT solutions for acquisition and processing of data for natural resource management. Besides excellence in research, the BioSense Center seeks to become a respected player in the policy making, influencing the regional and national legislation-making bodies on the basis of state-of-the-art research results, thus contributing to the optimization of the agricultural production, healthy and safe environment, and wellbeing of the general population and of the region.

The Center possesses significant human and material resources: 40 experienced researchers work in the BioSense Center, all holding the PhD degree, as well as 58 researchers with MSc and BSc degrees.

The objectives of the BioSense Center are:

  • To foster substantially new research directions, which could lead to scientific and technological breakthroughs.
  • To develop a systematic approach to management and exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), and to serve as a lighthouse in this field to other institutions in the region.
  • To be a strongpoint of technological development, eco-innovation, and knowledge & technology transfer in the region as well as in Europe, contributing to the European economy and growth.
  • To attract, develop and retain the best researchers with different educational backgrounds, with an emphasis on hiring young researchers and their inclusion in state-of-the-art multi- and inter-disciplinary research.
  • To provide necessary and currently not available state-of-the-art ICT solutions for agriculture, water management, forestry and environmental protection in line with EU regulations, that will help integration of Serbia into EU.
  • To be a regional networking institution and to present a backbone of the regional GEOSS and national LTER (Long-Term Ecosystem Research and Monitoring in Europe) network.
  • To be recognized as a preferred networking partner of other European institutions.
  • To provide sustainable development of the Center through commercialization of its IPR and its research results, as well as through various national and international funding schemes,
  • To foster integration of researchers from the West-Balkan Countries (WBC) into European Research Area (ERA).
  • To influence the policy-makers and governmental institutions to implement best practices, to the benefit of the society and the environment.
