News archive - [Event Review] Second conference on financial proposals for 2014-2020

In June 2011, the EC published its proposals for the EU budget – the ‘Multiannual Financial Framework’ (MFF) – for the period 2014-2020, which will specify the money to go to the different EU programmes, including the amount of money that will be allocated to the Horizon 2020 Programme for Research and Innovation 2014-2020 (the successor to FP7).
The MFF proposals are currently under discussion, with regular meetings being held between the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission. A second high-level conference on the EU Financial Framework was also held on 22 March 2012.

Whilst the first conference on the MFF in October 2011 was devoted to exchanging views with businesses, NGOs (non-governmental organisations), independent analysts and other stakeholders, the aim of this second conference was to deepen the discussion between the key actors involved in the process of finalising the next MFF and EU own resources. It involved representatives from national Parliaments, the Committee of the Regions, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Court of Auditors. Participants exchanged views on different aspects of the EU budget, including resources and expenditure, and the President of the EC, José Manuel Barroso, gave a speech emphasising the need to concentrate on inclusive, sustainable and smart growth and implement the Europe 2020 Strategy.
