News archive - New Research Commissioner Announced - DG Education Takes Over Marie Curie Actions

José Manuel Barroso has announced the portfolio allocations for the new European Commission, who will serve until 31 October 2014.

Maire Geoghegan-Quinn of Ireland, who currently serves on the Court of Auditors, will serve as the new Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, while the former Research Commissioner, Janez Potočnik of Slovenia, moves to take responsibility for the Environment portfolio.

New Portfolios within the EC include ‘Climate Action’ and ‘Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship’. The most significant change to the configuration of the research portfolio is the move of the Marie Curie Programme Units from the Directorate-General for Research to the Directorate-General for Education and Culture.

The new Commission must gain approval from the European Parliament, which will take a vote of consent on January 26,  2010. On the basis of this vote, the new EC will then be appointed by the European Council.
