News archive - Supporting To Small Firms and Entrepreneurs May Boost Innovation

A new OECD report, SMEs, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, examines how governments can boost innovation by improving the business environment for entrepreneurship and SME innovation and increasing the skills and capabilities of entrepreneurs. and small firms to innovate.

Jointly produced by LEED and the SMEs & Entrepreneurship Division, the report examines the innovation performance of new and small and medium-sized firms, the factors driving it forward and holding it back, and makes a series of policy recommendations.

Comprehensive internationally comparative data on SME performance, barriers to SME innovation and barriers to entrepreneurship is given for 40 countries, including OECD members and the big emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa. All 210 tables and graphs in the report have OECD Stat Links and are fully downloadable as Excel tables.

The report presents an "Innovation Strategy for SMEs and Entrepreneurship" that emphasises four priority actions:

  1. Promote conducive entrepreneurship cultures and framework conditions.
  2. Embed new firms and SMEs in knowledge flows.
  3. Strengthen entrepreneurial human capital.
  4. Improve the environment for social entrepreneurship and social innovation.
