News archive - Report published on the future of food

European 'Perspectives for Food 2030' are certainly relevant for the Western Balkan countries: A major food conference organised by DG Research brought together major actors from the fields of food technology, retailing, consumer and behaviour science, and economists to explore visions of the future and research needs. A new report summarises the discussions.

The report based on these proceedings, entitled ‘European Food Industry: Research and Competiveness Towards 2030’, assesses how consumer demand may evolve over the next 25 years and what impact this will have on the sector.
The report summarises the four main discussion sessions that took place at the conference: trends and outlook in world economics, culture and food; drivers of food demand and markets, today and tomorrow; new technologies for food production; and future perceptions of food. It ends by outlining the potential benefits of research into this field, such as a better understanding of the true impact that diet can have on health, better knowledge of different types of diseases and more effective natural resource management.
