News archive - 'Future of the Danube Area': 3rd Danube Conference Coming Up

The 3rd Danube Conference on October 5th and 6th, 2010 will take place under the motto "The Future of the Danube Area". As in 2006 and 2008, the Conference has been prepared by the State of Baden-Württemberg and the "Donaubüro Ulm" in cooperation with the Brussels Danube network

With the 3rd Danube Conference, a detailed discussion regarding the current status of the strategy will take place in Brussels for the first time after the European Commission’s broad public consultation. The Conference on October 5th and 6th, 2010 will focus on the following questions: In which way could the new Strategy affect the future of the young generation in the Danube area? How could the effect of individual projects be expanded to the entire Danube area?

The conference will start in the evening of October 5th with a reception at the Representation of Baden-Württemberg to the EU with high-ranking speakers and participants from the Danube area. A “Danube market” will show the variety as well as the binding ties within the Danube area with regards to society, cultural heritage and history.

During the Conference on October 6th high-ranking politicians and experts from the Danube area and the European Institutions will discuss within workshops on "Environment, water and risk prevention", "Improvement of Connectivity - energy and transport", "Socio-economic development" and "Ukraine: Building strong regional links across the whole Danube basin".

During the last few months, the European Commission invited citizens, stakeholders and scientists as well as local and regional authorities to participate in a public consultation on a new EU-Strategy for the Danube area. One of the cornerstones in the decision making process at the EU level from the point of view of the local and regional authorities was the adoption of the opinion issued by the Committee of the Regions (CoR) on the forthcoming Danube Strategy.

The results of the European Commission´s consultation, the outcome of different hearings and the discussions that are still underway, as well as the CoR’s opinion adopted in October 2009, will be incorporated into the European Commission´s proposal for a new EU-Strategy for the Danube area.
