News archive - Erasmus for All to succeed Lifelong Learning Programme

Seven existing programmes are due to be combined into a single programme called Erasmus for All, to run from 2014-2020. The EC has published its proposal for the successor to LLP, to be called Erasmus for All and designed to bring together all current EU and international schemes for education, training, youth and sport. The aim is to increase efficiency, making it easier to apply for funding and reducing fragmentation and duplication. The proposed budget for the new programme is €19 billion, which is a 70 per cent increase compared to the current programme. The proposal states that two-thirds of the available budget is likely to be used to fund mobility grants to enhance knowledge and skills.

There are three types of action within the new programme, which include learning opportunities for individuals, both within the EU and beyond, institutional co-operation between educational institutions, youth organisations, businesses, local and regional authorities and NGOs, and support for reforms in EU Member States to modernise education and training systems and promote innovation, entrepreneurship and employability. The European Parliament and Member States will now discuss the proposal and the co-decision process, during which some modifications are expected, should be completed by the end of 2013 to allow the new programme to start on 1 January 2014.

Which countries will be able to participate in Erasmus for All?

Erasmus for All will be open to all EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, EU candidate countries benefiting from a pre-accession strategy and other countries in the Western Balkans.

In addition, non-EU, mostly neighbourhood countries, will be able to benefit from actions aimed at promoting study and training opportunities abroad, as well as youth activities.

The new Erasmus for All website, which features a short video and FAQs, is available here.
