The first workprogramme in the area of "Science in Society" in the 'Capacities' Programme covers the year 2007. It is available from /doc/747.html. Here the main headers are reported.
The first calls were launched on December 22, 2006 with deadlines on May 15, 2007 and June 1, 2007.

The following topics are part of the workprogramme:

1. A more dynamic governance of the science and society relationship
1.1 Better understanding of the place of science and technology in society
1.1.1 Research on relationships between science, democracy and law
1.1.2 Research on ethics in science and technology
1.1.3 Research on the reciprocal influence of science and culture
1.1.4 The role and image of scientists
1.2 Broader engagement to anticipate and clarify political, societal and ethical issues
1.2.1 Developing governance on science-related questions
1.2.2 Conditions for an informed debate on ethics and science
1.3 Strengthening and improving the European science system
1.3.1 Encouraging the debate on information dissemination, including access to scientific results and the future of scientific publications
1.3.2 Increasing trust and supporting self-regulation in the scientific community
1.3.3 Improving the use of scientific advice and expertise for policy-making in Europe, and developing practical tools and schemes (e. g. electronic networks)
1.4 The evolving role of universities
1.4.1 Defining better framework conditions for more efficient university research
1.4.2 Promoting the establishment of structured partnerships with the business sector, having regard to universities’ research management capacities
1.4.3 Reinforcing knowledge-sharing between universities and society at large

2. Strengthening potential, broadening horizons
2.1 Gender and Research
2.1.1 Strengthening the role of women in scientific research
2.1.2 Gender dimension of research
2.1.3 Mainstreaming gender in Community research policy and programmes
2.2 Young People and Science
2.2.1 Supporting formal and informal science education in schools as well as through science centres and museums and other relevant means
2.2.2 Reinforcing links between science education and science careers
2.2.3 Research and coordination actions on new methods and science education

3. Science and society communicate
3.0.1 Provisions of reliable and timely research information to the scientific press
3.0.2 Training actions to bridge the gap between the media and the scientific community
3.0.3 Encouraging a European dimension at science events targeting the public
3.0.4 Promotion of science by audio-visual means via European co-production and the circulation of science programmes
3.0.5 Promotion of excellent trans-national research and science communication by means of popular prizes
3.0.6 Research aimed at enhancing science communication in its methods and its products

The first call with deadline May 15, 2007 covered the following topics:

1.1.2 Research on ethics in science and technology
1.1.3 Research on the reciprocal influence of science and culture
1.2.2 Conditions for an informed debate on ethics and science
2.1.1 Strengthening the role of women in scientific research
2.2.1 Supporting formal and informal science education in schools as well as through science centres and museums and other relevant means
2.2.2 Reinforcing links between science education and science careers
3.0.3 Encouraging a European dimension at science events targeting the public
3.0.5 Promotion of excellent trans-national research and science communication by means of popular prizes

The call with deadline June 1, 2007 the following ones:

1.1.1 Research on relationships between science, democracy and law
1.2.1 Developing governance on science-related questions

Furthermore, specific calls relating to the activities in the 'Cooperations' programme shall be launched - in 2007 with a focus on “Energy and Environment” and “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology”.
