The University of Latvia is continuing series of conferences on sustainable development started on 2003 and is announcing 3rd Event "Integrative Approaches towards Sustainability" supported by the European Commission. This International Conference on "Integrative approaches towards sustainability" will take place in Jurmala, Latvia, June 27 -­ 30, 2012. Organising Committee of the Conference is going to support 20 young researchers for participating in the Conference.

Call for Abstracts for Young Researchers and Students

The conference wishes to encourage participants with both practical and theoretical research activities and is a forum for debate and discussion. The strategic objectives of the Conference are:

  • Knowledge economy;
  • Sustainable development.

Organising Committee of the Conference is going to support 20 young researchers for participating in the Conference.

To apply for a Grant, young researchers should submit 250-word abstracts of the Conference posters. Selection will be made by the International Project board on the basis of the scientific profile of candidates and of their respective home institutions, and according to principles of equal opportunities among candidates. Deadline for applications is 15 April 2012. Authors of the accepted abstracts will be notified after 30 April 2012. Participants are requested to submit the abstract electronically (*.rtf format) to the Conference Secretariat (dinab ET latnet.lv). Please feel free to forward this Call to other colleagues.

According to the FP7 Programme, a young researcher is a person who undertakes research activities either on a professional basis or in the context of a PhD/Master/Diploma course or up to 6 years after PhD.

The selected candidates will be reimbursed economy travel costs for the cheapest (price/time ratio) transport serving the route. Accommodation (in double rooms) and admission fee for the Conference in Jūrmala (June 2012) will be covered directly by organisers.


Background

There is a serious and statistically well supported recognition, that Baltic See region countries are ranking high and have leadership in global scale in sustainable development and raising knowledge society and knowledge based economy. The conference is supposed to be the contribution of the project to sustainable development in the region and will be the follow up event to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20, 20 - 22 June 2012:
  • to discuss and to promote integration of researchers from traditional sciences in European and global networks contributing to knowledge economy and sustainable development;
  • to discuss corporate responsibility and sustainability in the regional decision-making process worldwide;
  • to discuss the global goals in transdisciplinary research and especially thresholds of sustainability and points of no return;
  • to contribute to the development of mission approach: Science for sustainable development and knowledge based economy;
  • to contribute in advanced transdisciplinary training of young researchers.

Target audience is researchers, politicians, and economists dealing with sustainable development and knowledge based economy.
