News archive - Update: Event: Why invest in Science in South Eastern Europe?

“Why invest in Science in South Eastern Europe?” is the title of an international conference organised jointly by the UNESCO Office in Venice, the Slovenian Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the Austrian Science and Research Liaison Offices. The event took place in Ljubljana on September 28 and 29, 2006.

The conference provided the knowledge base for policy-makers to improve allocation of funds for investments in science and research and to identify accompanying measures which will lead to enhanced socio-economic development in South East European countries as well as in other parts of the world.

The conference took place in Ljubljana for two days. Discussions were organised in four sessions:

  1. Science, Innovation and Wealth Generation: State of the Art and 'best practices'
  2. Globalisation vs. Marginalisation of Innovation Systems in SEE: Country Perspectives
  3. International Co-operation and External Assistance for Science and Innovation Systems in SEE
  4. High-level Round Table: Science and Innovation Policies in SEE

Presentations were also given by Commissioner Janez Potočnik, Assistant Director-General at the UNESCO Walter Erdelen, ministers and scholars from the SEE countries and around the world.
