News archive - New Internet Domains for Montenegro and Serbia

ICANN, the international body that allocates internet domain names, has approved a request for assigning the new internet domains '.me' (for Montenegro) and '.rs' (for Serbia), which will replace the current '.yu' sub-domains.

The 'cg.yu’ top-level domain name – composed from the abbreviated names of Montenegro (Cerna Gora) and Yugoslavia, was used as country code domain for the union of Serbia and Montenegro, which existed between 2003 and 2006. After the two split, Serbia transferred to the '.rs' top-level domain, and Montenegro to '.me'.

Montenegro began the change from the '.cg.yu' internet domain to the '.me' domain on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. The switch to the new domain will be free for all users. The old domain will be active until April 21, 2008.

In the case of Serbia, the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS) began registering Internet domain names with '.rs' extension on Monday, March 10, 2008.
Holders of .yu domain names will have priority to register .rs domains for six months from March 10, after which time applications will be taken on a first-come, first- served basis.
