News archive - Call for Proposals: European Social Survey Round 7

The Call for Proposals for Question Module Design Teams for ESS Round 7 is now open. Applications are welcomed for both 'new' rotating modules and 'repeat' modules that have been fielded on the ESS previously.

The design and preparation of the Round 7 questionnaire will begin in July 2012 in anticipation of the receipt of funding. To avoid delay, applications are being invited early. The final selection of teams and initial preparations will therefore take place in advance of funding confirmation. The closing date for applications is 18.00 CET time on May 01, 2012.

Procedures

The following guidelines apply to applications from and the selection of potential QDTs for ESS Round 7.

  • Applications must be made by teams of between 3 and 5 scholars, located in at least three different ESS countries.
  • Applications should be made in English using standard application forms, available from the ESS website (www.europeansocialsurvey.org)
  • Two teams will be selected to design modules for Round 7 by the ESS Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) before July 2012.
  • Up to 60 items are available for the modules so each application should be made for 30 items.  The overall allocation of items between modules may be varied by the Core Scientific Team (CST).  Items should be counted on a ‘1 answer = 1 item’ basis but weighted according to the proportion of respondents who answer the item. However please note the ‘appropriateness of design’ criteria.
  • No SAB member may apply (or be part of an extended team that applies) for a question design module.  If a member of the SAB wants to participate in any way in an ESS question module application, he or she should indicate this in due time and be replaced on the SAB.
  • If a scientist from the research institute of an SAB member is involved in an ESS question module application, the SAB member should take no part in the discussion of that application, and may be excluded from that part of the meeting at the discretion of the chair.
  • In order to facilitate efficient deliberations during the SAB’s selection meeting, a small sub-group of the SAB, together with independent outsiders, will be appointed as an advisory panel on module selection.  All other members of the SAB will be invited to send their comments on the modules (in writing) to this advisory panel at least one week before the meeting if they wish to comment.  The sub-group will produce a detailed note to inform and guide the SAB discussions.
  • One module will normally be on a new topic, i.e. a module not previously included as a rotating module in the ESS although, at the discretion of the Scientific Advisory Board, two new or two repeat modules may be selected.
  • Slightly different criteria apply to the selection of repeat modules and new modules (as shown in section 9). The decision of the SAB is final and there is no process of appeal.  Nor is feedback provided to unsuccessful applicants.
