News archive - [Event Announcement] Register for Transport Research Arena 2012

TRA is not just a conference but an arena which aims at bringing together European stakeholders from all areas of transport and transport-related activities. It is with a great satisfaction that the organisers welcome the initiative taken on the occasion of TRA 2012 to extend the scope of the conference to all modes of surface transport: road, rail and waterborne. A renewed TRA, covering all transport modes but also urban transport planning and mobility as well as co-modality, is precisely what the European Commission was calling for. The event will take place April 23-26, 2012 in Athens, Greece. The main theme for TRA 2012 in Athens is Sustainable mobility through innovation.

Innovation is essential for this. As stated in the White Paper "Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area – Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system" presented by the European Commission in 2011, EU research needs to address the full cycle of research, innovation and deployment in an integrated way by focusing on the most promising technologies and bringing together all the actors involved. Innovation can also play a role in promoting more sustainable behaviour.

TRA 2012 aims not only to present the latest achievements of European research, but above all at to provide a venue and forum where the technological developments needed for the next decades are discussed and debated.

Knowledge, too, needs to circulate efficiently, without bottlenecks, if we are to boost innovation. Today, in Europe, we are facing an innovation emergency. That is why the European Commission has placed Research and Innovation at the heart of the Europe 2020 Strategy. A step change in Europe's innovation performance is needed, in transport as in other domains. TRA 2012 will be a unique platform for stakeholders – European, national, regional and urban, public and private - to start mobilising towards well-defined goals in the frame of transport innovation partnerships.

TRA 2012 in Athens will have a new dimension. The opportunity is to create a truly European transport research and innovation arena where innovative technologies of tomorrow are presented and discussed with the aim of achieving the goals of the European transport policy.

The main theme for TRA 2012 in Athens is Sustainable mobility through innovation.

The main objective of the TRA 2012 is to contribute to innovation in sustainable mobility for Europe, by bringing together all the stakeholders of the transport system. The TRA gives the opportunity to the road, rail and maritime sectors to address common challenges and share knowledge in order to deliver together a greener, safer and smarter transport system. In pursuing its objective of sustainable mobility for Europe, the TRA enhances the global competitiveness of the European Union, by promoting the three aspects of the knowledge triangle: Research - Education - Innovation.

TRA 2012 will cover a wide spectrum of research and innovation activities. These will range from basic sciences to application oriented engineering and represent social, technical and economic aspects, aswell as policy and standards.  The TRA will also address demonstration activities.

TRA 2012 will continue its tradition and hold an early-stage research student competition with the goal of stimulating the interest among young researchers in the conference.

The TRA 2012 program will be organised into six pillars built around the European research and innovation strategies while emphasising on the issues of climate change, CO2 reduction, fuel efficiency and supply.
