News archive - [Event Review] WIRE 2011: Stakeholders agree Debrecen Declaration on research infrastructures

The WIRE 2011 conference took place in Debrecen, Hungary, in June. The event, which was held under the Hungarian Presidency of the EU, brought stakeholders together in an attempt to better connect cluster development and research infrastructures policies in order to enhance innovation and regional development. At the event, stakeholders agreed the Debrecen Declaration. This public Declaration makes a series of statements relating to clusters policy, research infrastructures, and more generally, research and innovation.

WBC-INCO.NET project also presented itself and selected results at the conference.

For example, it calls for more synergies between regions, Member States and the EU in research infrastructures policies. It suggests that more effort is needed in developing new research infrastructures and in upgrading existing ones.
It goes on to suggest that the EC should set out a series of concrete policy measures to better support cluster development in the EU. It also stresses the importance of linking EU Cohesion Funds and research infrastructures more than at present. Currently, it is possible to use Structural Funds to pay for the development of research infrastructures. However, in practice it can be difficult to use the funds in this way. The Declaration, therefore, calls on the EC to allow for more targeted use of Structural Funds in paying for the construction and operating costs of infrastructures.
