News archive - Dan Shechtman, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry became Honorary Professor of the St. Kliment Ohridski University-Bitola, North Macedonia
Dr. Shechtman was awarded with a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011 for the breakthrough and start of a new era in the field of crystallography. Currently, as a Professor at Technion Institute in Israel, he is committed in providing a good education to the young generations and to instil his spirit of entrepreneurship in them.
He was the first Nobel Prize Laureate to give a lecture at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (St. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje) and the first Nobel-Prize-winning-plenary speaker at the Conference in Materials Science organised by the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Skopje. During his visit, Professor Honoris Causa title was given to Dr. Shechtman at the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Bitola.
Dr. Anka Trajkovska Petkoska has invited Dr. Dan Shechtman to visit North Macedonia during their meeting at the SIPS Conference in Cyprus in 2019. He accepted the invitation then, but due to the pandemic, was not able to visit earlier. Dr. Trajkovska Petkoska, who holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY (USA) and is currently a Professor at University St. Kliment Ohridski, Bitola, also organised several visits to landmarks with historic, religious and ethnic importance, such as museums, churches and monasteries, archaeological sites, e.g. in Ohrid for the dignitary.
