RIINVEST Institute Empowers Projects for the Implementation of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans
In the framework of the activities for the implementation of the project POLICY ANSWERS as well as the platform "Green Action Space" (RIINVEST & KFOS), during this week a workshop and discussion with engagement were held, with regard to the achievements of Kosovo on implementation of the commitments that arise from the Green Agenda of the Western Balkans with a focus on the need to create synergies in the institutional plan but also on cooperation with research and scientific institutions, the business community, civil society and the media.
Researchers from the Riinvest Institute, representatives from the relevant state ministries, civil society as well as independent experts, and the media, presented their achievements on the objective that we have ahead of us, in order to implement very demanding commitments from the Green Agenda which is supported and empowered by the European Union for the countries of Western Balkans.
The participants discussed the latest achievements, and difficulties related to the definition of policies and strategies, as well as the legal framework, by presenting possible solutions with a special emphasis on raising the capacities for their implementation.
In the framework of the mentioned projects, the Riinvest Institute has prioritized decarbonization, the circular economy, and environmental protection - respectively the reduction of water and air pollution. On this occasion, it was emphasized that Kosovo's institutions and businesses in many sectors will very soon face serious obligations related to decarbonization, including the implementation of the carbon tax, which will significantly contribute to the improvement of the environment (By reducing carbon dioxide emissions to 1990 levels by 2030) but on the other hand, it requires the addressing of quite serious implications in the export of carbon-intensive emission products in certain sectors such as energy, mining, construction materials, etc.
This is not an easy process of adaptation and transformation. The representatives of the state institutions presented the progress, obligations, and institutional challenges that arise from the commitments of this agreement. Among other things, the important role of inter-institutional cooperation, legal aspects, and the actual situation on the ground regarding environmental pollution were emphasized. The inputs received from this workshop will be sent to the interested parties in the form of findings and recommendations.
