News archive - [Event Announcement] Product thinking and design thinking for science writers

#SciWriDesign

Successful science writing in the 21st century often requires more than beautiful prose, daring reporting or brilliant editing. That’s because science writing isn’t just writing. Science writers now build websites and interactive graphics, produce podcasts and videos, develop newsletters and much more. The complexity of such projects requires new types of thinking to better make decisions, plan and manage our work, and evaluate our success, especially in times when resources are becoming increasingly limited.

This is where product thinking and design thinking come in. Over the past several years, these ideas have been migrating from the business and tech worlds into journalism, but they can also be useful in many other settings in which science writers work. That’s because design thinking and product thinking can help you to prioritize and turn the focus to your readers to create a better product for your audience.

In this session, attendees will learn the basics of product thinking and design thinking from science writers who already use these principles in their work and workplaces. Attendees will participate in a hands-on activity and will walk away with a resource kit that introduces them to a selection of tools and techniques so they can develop the next great video series, story package, newsletter, podcast or other fantastic idea that’s built for the intended audience with defined metrics for success.
