News archive - MSCA: €387 million to support 2 500 researchers across Europe and beyond
The European Commission (EC) has announced the successful applicants to Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships and COFUND grants.
The grants are part of the Horizon 2020, the EU’s framework programme for research and innovation and are awarded to outstanding post-doctoral researchers as well as to exceptional doctoral and post-doctoral training programmes. The grants will fund research in a wide range of disciplines across the European Research Area.
The EU will finance nearly 1500 post-doctoral researchers to find solutions to current and future societal problems in cooperation with top universities and research organisations, while helping them enhance their skills and innovative potential. MSCA Individual Fellowships include research into anti-cancer therapies, energy management, optimising water utilisation for farming and understanding the effects of digital technologies on young adults.
Moreover, through the MSCA COFUND action, the EU will support 13 doctoral and 14 post-doctoral research training programmes of outstanding quality from across EU Member states and Horizon 2020-associated countries. Several doctoral and fellowship programmes will focus on global challenges such as climate change, whereas others will aim to increase the competitiveness of specific EU regions and Member States, such as Slovakia and Poland, by attracting and retaining talented researchers. A number of programmes will work in synergy with other European flagship initiatives such as the European Universities supported by Erasmus+ or the European Battery Alliance. More than 1 000 excellent researchers will participate in these programmes and directly profit from the training and career development dimension of MSCA.

I am delighted that 44% of the fellows are women and that we are granting 39 additional fellowships to researchers in European countries that are currently under-represented in the programme through our Widening Fellowships pilot scheme.”
