News archive - Commission presents Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy
On 17 December 2019, the European Commission adopted its Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy as part of a new European Semester cycle. The economic and employment policy strategy focuses on promoting competitive sustainability recognising research and innovation as enablers and drivers of the Union’s transformation into a sustainable economy.
The Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy should deliver on the vision set out in President Ursula von der Leyen's Political Guidelines. In line with the priorities of the European Green Deal, it aims at ensuring the European welfare systems, becoming the first climate-neutral continent and being a hub of innovation and competitive entrepreneurship. More broadly, the sustainable growth strategy should help the EU and its Member States achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which the Commission is integrating into the European Semester for the first time.
