At the second Eastern Partnership (EaP) formal ministerial meeting on environment and climate change today in Luxembourg, the EU and the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine)  reaffirmed the need to keep environment and climate action high on political and economic agendas.

The ministers acknowledged progress made since 2016 in particular in relation to the ratification of the Paris Agreement and policy and legislative changes on water, green economy, sustainable forest management, and on environmental assessments. They also welcomed broad stakeholder involvement in the preparation and implementation of the Eastern Partnership Action Plan on Environment and Climate. The Ministers underlined the need to strengthen environmental governance and mainstream environment and climate goals into all policy areas.

During the part on climate action, ministers discussed the opportunities arising from the transition to a low-carbon economy and the high potential for energy savings in Europe’s Eastern Neighbourhood. They  also exchanged views on the upcoming climate summit that will take place in December in Katowice (COP24), where the international community intends to finalize the technical rules to set the Paris Agreement in motion.
