News archive - Gender Equality at the Universities in Serbia
It is necessary to create measures that would break down the patriarchal matrix in universities in Serbia and help female scientists efficiently balance their family lives and professional careers.
This was the main conclusion of the PERFORM-supported research “Universities between Meritocracy and Patriarchy: Women and Power of Action”, presented on September 14th at the round table organised by Gender Equality Coordination Body, Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory and PERFORM.
The research was conducted as part of the second round of policy research projects organised by Public Policy Secretariat and PERFORM, and it focuses on identifying the barriers faced by women in higher education, examining the ways in which scientists combine their professional life with family responsibilities, and identifying opportunities for improving the higher education system in Serbia.
“There is a common misconception that the issue of gender equality at the University of Belgrade is a resolved issue. That is why research like these are very important. The University of Belgrade is preparing Gender Equality Action Plan, which should be adopted at the next session of UB Council, and which should contribute to resolving this issue”, stated Prof. Dr Ivanka Popovic.
