News archive - [Event Review] 9th Balkan Energy Finance Forum 2016

The 9th Balkan Energy Finance Forum is the successful conference delivered once again by EEL Events. A great meeting where decision makers within the region and from the rest of Europe had the chance to discuss the most recent hot topics about finance and energy in South-East Europe.

The Forum was held on the 31st of October and 1st November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belgrade, Serbia thanks to the sponsors, Green for Growth Found and BDK Advokati, and to the huge number of participants, which made the event a triumph.

The conference opened with the welcoming address delivered by the Chairman of the Forum Mr. Aleksandar Kovacevic, Senior Economist and Lecturer at the Oxford institute for Energy Studies.

The Renewable Energy session opened with a presentation delivered by Mr. Mirza Kusljugic, professor at the University of Tuzla, on the renewable energy development within the current electricity market in the region. At the end of the presentation the Renewable Energy in the Balkans panel took place. The panel was moderated by Ms. Carrie Walczak, Head of Project Finance at Finance in Motion, advisor for the Green for Growth fund. The panellists that took part in the discussion were, Mr. Dragoljub Cibulic, Senior Partner at BDK Advokati, Mr. Nikola Catovic, Consultant at MACS GmbH and Mr. Yanos Michopoulos, MD and Founding Partner of Vennergy Partners. The conversation on the topics of the panel continued during the networking coffee break, where the audience had the chance to ask additional questions to the speakers. The Renewable Energy session closed with a presentation on developing and financing wind energy projects by Mr. Yanos Michopoulos.

After the Renewable Energy session Mr. Andreas Gunst, Partner from DLA Piper, delivered a presentation on the TSO Certification under the Energy Community Treaty.

The morning session ended with the networking lunch break where all the participants had the chance to speak to each other and get ready for the following session.

Energy Efficiency was the last session for day 1 and was opened with a presentation offered by Mr. Pavel Teremetsky, Associate Director for EBRD, on EBRD’s Green Economy Transition approach.

The Energy Efficiency session continued with the panel of discussion about implementing Energy Efficiency Solutions in the Public and Private sectors. Moderator of the panel was Mr. Lachlan Cameron Senior Energy Officer at Finance in Motion, advisor to the Green for Growth fund. The panelists were Mr. Aleksandar Stojkov, Senior Investment Officer also from Finance in Motion, Ms. Ankica Barbulov, Director for GGE Esco, Mr. Juergen Kern, Head of Division for KfW Entwicklungsbank, Mr. Mihai Toader-Past, Co-founder & Project Manager for EFdeN and Ms. Sabine Ziem-Milojevic, Sustainable Energy Specialist for E4tech.

The Energy Efficiency session closed with a presentation delivered by Ms. Maja Studovic, Senior Project Engineer at Fichtner GmbH on Energy Efficiency projects with their result.

The first day of the conference finished with a Networking reception cocktail where the participants had the chance to continue the conversations with a glass of wine.

The second day of the conference began with an introductory speech prepared by the Chairman Mr. Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The first presentation for the Biogas and Biomass session was about the corn stover as feedstock for biogas and lignocellulosic bioethanol, presented by Mr. Milan Martinov, Professor at the University of Novi Sad.

Subsequent to the presentation there was the panel discussion on Investment opportunities in Biogas. The panel was moderated by Ms. Milica Vukadinovic, Project Development Component Leader for GIZ GmbH. The panelists were Mr. Goran Matovic, Head of EE and RE department for SEE Consultants, Mr. Milan Martinov, and Mr. Sinisa Janjusevic Executive Director for GGE Esco.

After the networking break Mr. Ladislav Tomalci, Director of Erste Group Bank AG, opened the second session of day 2, Developing and Financing Energy Projects, with a presentation on the future of renewable support.

The session continued with the panel of discussion titled Financing Energy Generations Project, which was moderated by Mr. Ivan Gazdic, Senior Associate at Bojovic and Partners. The panelists for the session were Mr. Andreas Chollet, Head of Project Development International at WDP Europe, Mr. Justus Vitinius, First Vice President Infrastructure at DEG, Mr. Aleksandar Savic Director for Erste Group Bank AG and Ms. Hana-Muriel Setteboun, CEO at FK Group.

The final session of the conference commenced with an introductory presentation delivered by Mr. Milos Mladenovic, Managing Director for SEEPEX. Afterwards Mr. Mladenovic joined the panel of discussion entitled “the evolution and forecast of the Balkan Power Market”. The moderator of the panel was Ms. Anna Patterson, Marketing Manager at the WU Executive Academy. The rest of the panelists were Mr. Nickolas Frydas, senior energy specialist at IFC, Mr. Nenad Stefanovic Senior Expert for Electricity for EARS, Mr Mihai Toader-Pasti Co-founder and project manager for EFdeN and Ms. Zinaida Dimitrijevic, Lead expert for electricity generation at JP Elektroprivreda BiH.

To close the conference, the chairman Mr. Aleksandar Kovacevic made a very inspiring speech on the values and the possibilities of the future which was followed by the networking lunch were all the participants had the chance to continue and develop all the discussions of the conference.
