RRPP Conference “Migration and Policy Developments in Bosnia-Herzegovina” held in Sarajevo on 23 March 2014

Organized by the Center for Economic Development and Research (CEDAR) in cooperation with CESI Centre, the event constituted the first attempt to promote the research results of the RRPP-funded project “Migration and Women Empowerment in the Western Balkans”. The discussions between governmental representatives and participating researchers on migration policy in BiH shall continue in monthly meetings to be coordinated by CEDAR. The conference drew substantial media attention.

Dear applicants,
Thank you very much for your overwhelming interest and a great number of submissions following the RRPP Call for regional projects. We are now in the process of sorting them. Please note, those who have applied with more than one project are kindly requested to contact us at rrpp@unifr.ch. Similarly, those who had submitted an application and have not received a confirmation email by Thursday 12.00pm shall contact us as well.

Regional Workshop “Migration and Development in the Western Balkans” in Elbasan, Albania 

The aim of the RRPP regional workshop in Elbasan was to present the relevant focus group findings highlighting the role of migration and its impact on women empowerment in the Western Balkan countries. Its media coverage is also available on RRPP website.

A new web site www.remittances-wb.com with all relevant research information on migrants’ remittances in the Western Balkans has been developed by one of the RRPP project leaders.

Scientific Research Potential in Bosnia and Herzegovina on BHT1 

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s television station, BHT1, aired on 28 October 2013 a documentary entitled “POTENCIJAL”. Given the fact that an increasing number of young and capable researchers in BiH leave their alma mater to work at universities abroad or choose to conduct research for different NGOs, the documentary tries to unveil the reasons behind this trend.

The Study on "Transnational Networks, Transnational Entrepreneurship and the Role of the State: the Cases of Serbia and Albania" is now online

This is the first study to conduct an empirical investigation of the relationship between migration and development in Serbia and Albania. It thus contributes to debates focusing on the developmental potential of Diaspora networks. Empirical findings organised across different levels of analysis (micro, macro and meso), as well as the typologies of “paths to entrepreneurship” deserve particular attention.

RRPP Open Day in Macedonia 

The event brought together around 65 interested participants who used the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing RRPP Call for regional research projects. Also researchers engaged in the previous RRPP calls shared their experience with the Programme.

RRPP Open Day in Serbia

Attended by more than 40 interested participants, the RRPP "Info day" in Belgrade provided details on the new RRPP Call for regional research projects 2014-2016 and addressed the role and key achievements of the RRPP in the region.

RRPP Open Day in Kosovo

The RRPP Open Day in Prishtina, Kosovo, brought together over 50 participants. The event aimed at promoting and explaining in detail the RRPP Call for Regional Research Projects 2014-2016 as well as the role, objectives and main goals of the RRPP in supporting the research community in the Western Balkans.

Some 80 participants attended the RRPP Open Day in Tirana, Albania, organized to provide detailed information on the ongoing RRPP Call for Applications for Research Projects 2014-2016.

Research Results are now online: Migration and its Impacts from the Perspective of the Economic Development of the Home Country: with Special Reference to Kosova 

The varied research outcomes of this RRPP-funded project show that the migration remains relatively high and is preconditioned by the low level of income. However, the analysis of the determinants of the decision to return proves that Kosovan households are selective in their return migration behaviour.

Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) selected as Local Coordination Unit of the Regional Research Promotion Program (RRPP) in Albania 

IDM is an independent, non-governmental organization, working to strengthen the civil society and Albania’s integration processes. It assists reforming and the consolidation of good governance as well as inclusive policy-making processes.

CLOSED: Call for Institutional Partnership RRPP Local Coordination Unit (LCU) Bosnia and Herzegovina, April 2014 – September 2016

The RRPP Management, implemented by the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, launched a call for partnership with an institution/organisation in BiH that would be interested to act as its Local Coordination Unit (LCU). Deadline for submitting applications: March 04, 2014.

Research Results Summary of the RRPP Funded Project: "Migration and Development in Albania and Macedonia: The Effects of Remittances on Education and Health of Family Members Left Behind" is now online

The main research findings center around the impact of parental migration on children`s education and health, particulraly their obesity and growth, as well as the analysis of relevant migration policies. The latter prove to be more general rather than dealing with the intricacies of the impact of migration and remittances on the socio-economic development in Albania and Macedonia.

Research Results Summary of the RRPP Funded Project "The Impact of Migration on Women Empowerment in Western Balkan Countries" is now online

The project investigates how migration has acted as a catalyst for expanding the opportunities of women economically, socially and in inter-personal relations. It asks particularly whether own migration or migration of (male) family members have any impact on the woman’s empowerment in traditionally patriarchal societies of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.

Country-specific policy briefs on media assistance are now online

Four country-specific policy briefs point out main characteristics of international media assistance in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Macedonia, its challenges and successes. They have been prepared as a part of the project "Development of Functional Media Institutions in Western Balkans - A Comparative Study" implemented in 2012 and 2013.

The new section: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) were added to the relevant documents of the RRPP Call for regional research projects 2014-2016. In order to facilitate and mainstream the application process this list was updated regularly, providing crucial information to the incoming inquiries.

Now online: Working Paper Series on Media Assistance in the Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia

The main question guiding this working paper series is whether ‘models’ of media systems that have developed in the West can be exported to other countries, where democracy is less consolidated.

CLOSED: Call for Papers for the volume "A Life for Tomorrow - Social Transformations in South-East Europe"

Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” Skopje (Macedonia), Centre for Empirical Cultural Studies of South-East Europe (Serbia), Social Research Kosova (Kosovo) and Centre for Social Research “Analitika” (Bosnia-Herzegovina) issued a call for papers to be published in the volume “A Life for Tomorrow – Social Transformations in South-East Europe”. The deadline for submissions was January 20th, 2014.

The LSEE Research Network on Social Cohesion in South Eastern Europe at the London School of Economics was organizing the 2nd conference to be held on 27-28 March 2014 in London. Deadline for submission of abstracts: 20 January 2014.
