News archive - [Event Review] European Nanoelectronics Forum: Innovation for growth

'Innovation for growth' was the theme of the last European Nanoelectronics Forum, jointly organized by EUREKA nano-electronics funding instrument CATRENE, the ENIAC Joint Undertaking and the European Commission in Barcelona on November 27 and 28,  2013.

European actors came together with the objective to update a common strategy and build the support chain necessary to maintain a strong nanoelectronics ecosystem as well as reverse the negative trend concerning local consumption and manufacturing. During this event, participants gained insight into the secrorial strategy for Europe, and on the status and progress of the EU's Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).

In an interview for Electronics Weekly, Enrico Villa, chairman CATRENE, EUREKA Cluster for semiconductor process technology, manufacturing and applications stated that ‘the industry should reverse its strategy of continuous focussing by enlarging product portfolios to increase the number of European players in the ranking of top players'. To enable the enlargement of product portfolios, Villa said that: 'public authorities should provide a level playing field equivalent to other regions.'

'We need manufacturing,' added Villa, 'the European industry is not attractive and not competitive for manufacturing.'
