The EU’s new framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, is soon to begin. Between October 2013 and January 2014, each country of the EU will host its own launch event to celebrate the beginning of the programme which will last from 2014-2020.

With just over 70 billion euro, Horizon 2020 will be the principal engine of new growth and jobs in Europe. Support through Horizon2020 is stated as being for:

  • Strengthening the EU’s position in science with a dedicated budget of 24,341 million euro. This will provide a boost to top-level research in Europe, including the very successful European Research Council (ERC).
  • Strengthening industrial leadership in innovation 17,015 million euro. This includes major investment in key technologies, greater access to capital and support for SMEs.
  • Providing 30,956 million euro to help address major concerns shared by all Europeans such as climate change, developing sustainable transport and mobility, making renewable energy more affordable, ensuring food safety and security, or coping with the challenge of an ageing population.

Horizon 2020 will tackle societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the market by helping innovative enterprise to develop their market oriented research. This market-driven approach will include financial backing to programmes like Eurostars whose budget, largely comprised of funding from its member states, totals just over 1.14 billion euro under Horizon 2020.

While the final budget for the new framework programme still needs to complete the ordinary legislative procedure of the European Union, events around the EU will go forth to celebrate and commence the next phase of European innovation and growth by means of Horizon 2020.
