News archive - [Call for Papers] COST Arts & Technologies (CAT)

Arts have obvious intersections with both science and technology (S&T). The nature, aim and approaches of arts are, however, typically different from those applied in S&T. While particularly science - but also to some extent technology - typically follows rigid and predefined structured criteria, arts are more ad-hoc and creative with less or no such restrictions. Both arts and technologies serve society by increasing the welfare, but it may be argued that while technologies aim at satisfying the welfare through consumer orientation, arts focus more on social and cultural aspects.

The COST Arts & Technologies (CAT) workshop, that will be held in Zagreb on 25 - 27 November 2013, assumes that there are large potential gains in integrating arts on the one hand with technologies on the other, to a larger extent than what has been done so far. Combining artistic creativity with technological expertise should in itself have a great potential to lead to new products, services and social innovations.

The workshop aims at enabling innovative integration of arts and multi-, inter-, and transmedia technologies and their actual and potential integration with industries and society as a way of enhancing competitiveness and creativeness of European innovation in arts and technologies. The workshop will deliver initiatives and applications enhancing innovation, welfare and greening of Europe.

CAT will make use of several methods for achieving its aims: gathering top-level international experts presenting current state of the arts and technologies; presentation of new ideas through an open call; interactive sessions and brain-storming.

COST invites researchers to submit papers by 15 September 2013, describing how to integrate artistic initiatives within media technologies in order to produce prototypes leading to new products and services. The papers shall describe new initiatives (ideas, processes and methods), concepts, applications, developments and implementations of different media technologies created by means of artistic processes. The concrete or potential contribution of the initiatives and applications in enhancing innovation, welfare or greening of Europe shall be addressed.
