Background

The Data Centre Western Balkans was set up in September 2012, and is currently being financed for a pilot period by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), through the Regional Research Promotion Programme (RRPP) Western Balkans. For the duration of the pilot period, the centre is being hosted by the NCCR Democracy at the University of Zurich, in partnership with local and international universities.

A major impediment to social science research conducted in the Western Balkans countries is the lack of access to relevant data, therefore the Data Centre tries to address this issue by assembling existent survey data and by making it accessible on this webpage for all interested persons or institutions.

The Data Centre Team is based in Zurich (main administrative office) and in Belgrade (local project coordination office). More local coordination offices may follow soon. The academic advisory board provides advice, input and feedback to assist the functioning of the Data Centre. The Centre is also keen to be part of a broad network of research institutions dealing with the Western Balkans region. The project is closely linked with RRPP Western Balkans, which has been involved in various stages of its development and running.
