News archive - European Forum Alpbach 2013- call for contributions and scholarships is open!

Every summer since 1945, the European Forum Alpbach has been taking place in the mountain village Alpbach in the Tyrol (Austria). In 2012, more than 4000 participants from over 60 countries attended the Symposium in order to experience high-ranking speakers from the fields of science, economy, politics and art. The Alpbach Perspectives are one out of several Symposia taking place during the three weeks of the Forum. In 2013, the Alpbach Perspectives will tackle one of the most pressuring challenges of our time and deal with the future of Europe and the development of a more sustainable social and economic model. The theme will be “European Union: With or Without You?”. The above mentioned Closing Discussion will shed light on topics such as youth unemployment, austerity measures and the rise of nationalistic feelings to be observed all over Europe.

The European Forum Alpbach 2013 will follow the theme of „Experiences and Values“. These two concepts are in a relationship full of tensions, as stressed by the President in the welcome message on the Forum website. On the one hand, after two World Wars, it was almost unthinkable in the first half of the twentieth century to talk about the meaningfulness of traditional values. On the other hand, in the second half of the past century, it became possible to anchor human dignity in constitutions and to move European integration forward on the basis of a comprehensive charter of fundamental rights in a way that makes it luckily difficult for us to even imagine a new war or conflict between former European rivals.

A detailed programme and more information concerning the European Forum Alpbach 2013 and its speakers will be available on the website in the beginning of May 2013, some initial information is however already accessible by clicking here.
