News archive - NET-IT-BE newsletter - new information service by the Net Futures department of DG CONNECT

The Net Futures department of DG CONNECT issued the first edition of net-it-be newsletter, an open window to the latest initiatives coming out and the latest European Future Internet policy, research and innovation (R&I) news.

Net Futures was created just last year, as part of a reorganisation within the European Commission, yet a number of important achievements was already announced.

The unveiling of the European Cloud Computing Strategy, progress towards phase three of the Future Internet-PPP, the forthcoming flagship Web-Entrepreneurs Strategy, as well as robust research outcomes are concrete results of the first six months of operations. Positive signs are also being seen from teams overseeing projects in future network infrastructure, large-scale future internet experimentation, and international co-operation efforts (i.e. coordinated calls with Brazil and Japan). These demanding portfolios are being successfully developed and propelled thanks to the energy and commitment of the Net Futures colleagues and stakeholders.

In 2013, the department looks forward to continued success and R&I breakthroughs in four core business areas:

  • growing the European internet industry of tomorrow;
  • supporting web/digital entrepreneurs with new opportunities offered by the web economy;
  • pioneering innovative uses (benefiting society and the economy) by validating as yet fully mature technologies and business models in real settings; and
  • fostering tomorrow’s new networked systems and applications.

Stakeholders are called to help achieve the vision of a truly European Future Internet policy, a clear path to growth through research and innovation.

In such a framework, this newsletter wants to be a communication channel encouraging open and committed dialogue, ‘Net Futures-style’. Ideas, and comments on how to achieve the best results are always welcomed. With readers' feedback the goal is to build a shared pool of European Future Internet knowledge and skills, a potentially valuable contribution to the Digital Agenda for Europe and Horizon 2020.
