News archive - European funding programme Eurostars boosts employment in Europe

Eurostars is today the only European fund to be specifically dedicated to small and medium-sized companies which are specialising in high-tech and research, also referred to as ‘RTD intensive SMEs’. Financed by the governments of thirty-three European countries, the Eurostars Programme is supporting innovators all over the continent.

A recent analysis of the projects financed through Eurostars and of the companies participating in the programme shows that each Eurostars projects receives an average of 0.63 million euros in public funds. Eurostars projects being joint endeavours between companies and universities located in different European countries, the many participants in a single project receive an average of 0.20 million euros.

Those amounts are used for the development of new technological products, which in turn favour employment within the companies taking part in Eurostars, or are sometimes directly used for the hiring of a scientific expert. The study, which will be officially published as part of the evaluation of the programme later this year, reveals that as a direct result of their participation in Eurostars, those small businesses will generally employ four new staff members three years after the completion of their project.

Those new employees can be technicians, scientists and engineers but also sometimes marketing specialists, hired to help selling the new products developed during Eurostars projects.
