News archive - [Towards Horizon 2020] Strengthening the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and launching new KICs
As we move towards Horizon 2020, there are plans to strengthen the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and it is planned to launch new KICs in 2014.
The EIT was set up in 2008 with the aim of increasing European sustainable growth and competitiveness by reinforcing Europe’s capacity to innovate and integrating the knowledge triangle –i.e. research, innovation and education. It has a strong focus on joint PhDs and entrepreneurship. The three KICs launched in 2009 address climate change (Climate KIC), sustainable energy (KIC InnoEnergy) and Information and Communication Technologies (EIT ICT Labs).
There are plans to integrate the EIT fully into Horizon 2020. Information on its future activities is contained in the EIT Strategic Innovation Agenda for the European Commission (EC). Three new KICs will be launched in 2014: 1) health and demography, 2) food security and 3) raw materials. Three more will be launched in 2018: 4) added-value manufacturing, 5) smart and secure societies and 6) urban mobility.
The total funding proposed for the EIT is €3.1 billion, of which €1.69 billion for existing KICs and €1.01 billion and €259.75 million for the second and third waves respectively. The remaining EIT budget would cover dissemination and administrative activities.
Both the number of new KICs and their funding will be decided during 2013 as part of the negotiations on Horizon 2020 between the EC, the European Parliament and the Council.
