Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has just published the Regional Yearbook 2012, which allow users to explore statistics relating to key regional development indicators such as population density, employment, R&D spending and other economic factors. Data comes from all 27 EU Member States, as well as, when available, the four EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), the acceding country (Croatia) and three of the candidate countries (Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey).
The Eurostat Regional Yearbook 2012 includes a chapter "Science, technology and innovation" which presents statistical information that illustrates regional developments for science and technology indicators within the European Union (EU). The domains covered are research and development (R & D), the number of researchers, human resources in science and technology (HRST), employment in high technology sectors and patent applications.
The EU‑27 had an R & D intensity ratio of 2.01 % in 2009, in other words, expenditure on R & D was equivalent to 2.01 % of GDP. A total of 35 of the 266 EU had an R & D intensity above 3 % in 2009. As such, they exceeded the 3 % R & D intensity target set by the Barcelona Council in 2002 and maintained in the Europe 2020 strategy. Among these 35 regions, 11 were in Germany, eight in the United Kingdom, four in Sweden, three each in Denmark and Finland and two each in Belgium, France and Austria. Together these 35 regions accounted for 45.0 % of all R & D expenditure in the EU. Among EFTA countries (no regional analysis is available) Iceland had an R & D intensity of 3.11 % and Norway of 1.80 % in 2009, while the rate in Switzerland was 2.99 % in 2008. Turkey (no regional analysis available) had an R & D intensity of 0.85 % in 2009, while the Croatian region of Sjeverozapadna Hrvatska had an R & D intensity of 1.54 %, far above the intensity recorded in the two other Croatian regions (also 2009).
