News archive - Competitive Calls to join running FP7 projects: Confine (Community Networks Testbed for the Future Internet) and Fi-ware (Future Internet Core Platform)

- Competitive Call CONFINE - open until October 19, 2012

- Competitive Call FI-WARE: Future Internet Core Platform - open until November 7, 2012

The EU's Seventh Framework Programme for research and development (FP7) includes projects, which may have reserved a portion of their budgets for specific tasks to be carried out by a new beneficiary (or beneficiaries), who will join the consortium at a later date. These new beneficiaries will be selected from proposals submitted in response to a "competitive call". In other cases, projects might launch open calls for the replacement of an existing partner.

Currently two competitive calls are open:

1) CONFINE (Community Networks Testbed for the Future Internet) is organizing two open calls to attract external experimenters. The first open call will close on Friday October 19, at 17:00h Brussels time.

The CONFINE project is designing, building and operating a distributed testbed to support experimental research in community networking: Community-lab.net.

Topics of interest for this open call, but not limited to:

  • Wireless mesh networks
  • Wireless MAC and routing protocols
  • Services and applications
  • Cross-layer designs
  • Hybrid networks with wireless and optical fibre links
  • Tools for bootstrapping and running community networks
  • Performance modelling and evaluation
  • Quality of service provisioning
  • Quality of experience in community networks
  • Community network security and privacy
  • Large-scale management and data collection infrastructures
  • Incentive models for encouraging users and businesses to participate in community networks
  • Socio-technical-economic experiments for community networks

Budget: 250.000 Euro. The requested funding per experiment should normally be in the order of EUR 50 K€.

2) The FI-WARE (Future Internet Core Platform) project has reserved a portion of the project budget to fund specific tasks to be carried out by a new beneficiary or beneficiaries which will join the consortium after start of the project. These later-joining beneficiaries are selected by means of a series of competitive Open Calls.

Each FI-WARE Open Call is focused on a number of topics. Proposers will be selected for each topic, with one or more successful proposer in each.  Each topic refers to a set of functionalities to be supported by GEs to be integrated in the FI-WARE Platform. Proposals should address the definition of open and royalty-free specifications, as well as the development of a reference implementation, of new GEs in the FI-WARE Platform that will cover these functionalities.

The FI-WARE project follows an Agile process to implement its work plan. Aligned with this, the set of functionalities to be covered by proposers to each topic are described in the form of Epics.

Regarding the FI-WARE Second Open Call, the topics to be covered are:

  • Advanced Web-based User Interface GEs
  • Stream-oriented GEs
  • Cloud Proxy Extended Development and Management Platform GE

Submitters to this Open Call should be legal entities that are established in an EU Member State, or FP7 Associated State.

Total EC funding available for new partners: up to 6 Million Euro.
