Towards a Western Balkans regional innovation area - supporting innovation in the Western Balkans (Session by EC, DG R&I)
This session will be organised within the Global Innovation Summit 2021 by the European Commission DG R&I.
Over the last 10 years, the innovation performance within the Western Balkans region has significantly improved. But to catch up with other European regions, the focus of innovation efforts needs to be enhanced.
At the last Ministerial Conference, Western Balkan Ministers pledged to increase their support for research, innovation, education, training and culture. Senior government officials regularly meet at the Western Balkans Platforms on Education and Training and Research and Innovation. Ministers expressed their firm support for the proposed ‘Western Balkans Agenda on Innovation, Research, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport’ and highlighted the various EU programmes aimed at improving cross-border cooperation in these fields.
The Western Balkans Agenda on Innovation, Research, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport will provide opportunities to students, researchers, innovators and cultural operators so that they can access new markets, become more competitive and build sustainable prosperity. A intensive innovation agenda will be essential for enhancing human capital development as well as the development of a sustainable innovation ecosystem.
In these two sessions, participants will learn more on the opportunities for innovation support for Western Balkans organisations and their partners across EU programmes and beyond, aiming to achieve synergies. Cooperation possibilities with international financial institutions, The EIT’s Knowledge and Innovation Centres (KICs), intergovernmental organisations and regional innovation investments will be explored.
