Short description

The European Commission adopted in December 2019 an ambitious 30-years strategy to combat climate change and make the European Union carbon-free by mid-century.

The EU Green Deal contains a total of 50 policy measures, including a legally binding target of reducing EU emissions to net zero by 2050, a carbon border tax to prevent companies from relocating outside the EU to avoid climate legislation, a €100 billion just transition fund to help spread the burden and help coal-reliant regions, and a policy to not conclude any free trade agreement with a country that is not a signatory to the Paris climate agreement.

Description

The discussion:
With a new European Parliament, European Commission, European Council President and leadership of the European Central Bank in place, it is time to examine the prospects of that strategy. Is this perhaps the sign of a new European Rennaisance, in a century of fierce global competition in every aspect?

Alliance Europa Brussels and Volt België are thus organising a debate to discuss the opportunities and possible hurdles on the way of the EU’s green vision, and explore what we can best do as active citizens, campaigners and politicians to contribute to that effort.

Moderators and co-speakers:
Yannis Karamitsios, Alliance Europa Brussels and Alliance4Europe
Marcela Valkova, Volt België

Panel speakers:
Mr. Philippe Lamberts and Michael Bloss, MEPs, Greens/EFA in the European Parliament
