EU Enlargement and Reform Agenda: Implications for Turkey and the Balkans

Event date
June 21, 2018
Venue
Vienna
Country
Austria
Short description

Enlargement used to be the key factor of the European Union’s transformative power. In view of the EU’s internal crises, and a general democratic rollback in candidate countries, enlargement seems from today’s perspective rather unlikely. Has the EU reached its limits? How can the reforms of the EU institutions and structures address the expectations of candidate countries and at the same time guarantee the cohesion of the EU? Are sectoral partnerships an alternative? How long will the Balkan states remain in the waiting room and what is the future of EU-Turkey relations?
