Participants from different countries learn and discuss about facts, challenges and projects of the Region. It takes place in various venues in Ulm and Neu-Ulm such as the City Hall of Ulm, the Vöhlin Castle in Illertissen and the House of the Danube.

Since its start, the Danube Summer School has become a well-established and respected platform of exchange and debate among political decision makers, academics and students. One day is contributed to a high-level panel discussion on current political issues such as the financial turmoil, critical political elections, nationalism and populism, Sinti- and Roma inclusion, and the challenges with new migration flows. Results and thoughts have been documented in several publications in the Danube Book Series of the European Danube Academy.

Each Danube Summer School was also a project development and ideation workshop. Small working groups with participants of different backgrounds are encouraged to develop feasible projects that help to foster cooperation and support the unfolding of the region’s economic potential. Some of the project have been successfully implemented, such as the Initiative Danube Area Research Centre (DAReC) that has ever since become a solid partner of the European Danube Academy.

Information on the Danube Summer School 2016

This year’s summer school will be the third Danube Summer School in Ulm/Neu Ulm, Germany. Similar to last year, will be the venues (Vöhlin Castle, City Hall Ulm) and the structure and the time (Sep 25 – 30). We will include more international lecturers and high level political decision makers from the Danube Region. About 25 participants meet for one week to discuss with academics and decision makers on the Danube region.

For non-german participants, the European Danube Academy will cover the accommodation and catering during the Summer School.

Lectures and Assignment

Lectures, workshops and speakers are selected to give a comprehensive insight into the challenges and chances of the Danube Region. The participants have been selected among many applicants due to their outstanding educational background and achievements. In order to make sure that their expertise contributes to the success of the Summer School, they are encouraged to work in groups to prepare a presentation on relevant Danube related issues or develop a project idea and concept, which will be presented on Friday September 30^th. The European Danube Academy has published the results of the previous Danube Summer Schools in its Danube Book Series.

The requirements to the program are:

• Strong interest in the Danube Region’s politics, economy, culture and history.
• Older than 20 years
• Postgraduate student, student in the last years of the undergraduate studies or recent graduate
• Fluent in English
