The “National Development Strategy for SMEs” was elaborated and approved in the summer of 2002, and was adopted for a 10 year period, through to the year 2012. First, it presents the strategy revision process and then key current characteristic of the SME sector in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (the size of the sector: output, numbers of enterprises and employment; industrial sectors and SMEs etc). It also focuses on the legal and regulatory framework, taxation and financial conditions and general support to entrepreneurs. Throughout the text many problems in the SME sector are pointed out.
