South-Eastern Europe: The Balkans

This is a report on situation in West Balkan countries and EC assistance to help them. It is stated that the EC is the largest single donor in the Balkans, spending over 839 million euro in the region in 2001 alone on top of 956 million euro in 2000 through the CARDS programme.
EU assistance is focused on helping the countries to implement the Stabilisation and Association Process – namely, stabilising their internal economies and political relations, promoting regional co-operation between the countries and facilitating closer association with the EU. Then situation in each country is described and EU assistance in these countries presented.
