Short description

Themed section: Peripheral Metropolises – Urban Dynamics in Southeast Europe
Guest Editors: Walter Matznetter, Robert Musil

Aims and scope of the themed section
Southeast Europe is distinct from other European peripheries (e.g. the South-West or the North): from a historic perspective, the region is shaped by a fragile statehood with insecure, moving borders, and an influence or control of foreign powers (the Ottoman, the Russian, the Austro-Hungarian Empire). Therefore, southeast Europe is characterised by small nation-states with an urbanisation that is dominated by metropolitan capital cities.

Today, this region is characterized by a migration outflow from urban areas and an economic dynamic that is highly concentrated within the agglomerations. Furthermore, firms show a high share of companies controlled from abroad. Finally, southeast Europe is – again – a zone, where the spheres of interest of different foreign powers overlap: European Union, Russia and China/Arab countries intervene with policies and money. How does this affect recent urban dynamics?

The aim of this themed section is a discussion of historic and recent urban trajectories against the background of processes of peripherisation. What are the implications and manifestations of this peripherisation regarding to economic restructuring, demographic dynamics and the built environment? Furthermore, the themed section asks for the explanatory value of mainstream theories in urban and regional studies. Do they adequately reflect the situation in this region? How can these travelling ideas be adopted, or do we need new, independent concepts?

Papers are invited that are related to the following topics:
  • Urbanisation/re-urbanisation
  • Housing markets/Gentrification/Financialisation
  • Economic transformation/Innovation processes
  • Transformation of built environment/large scale urban projects
  • Public Institutions/firms/foreign investors
  • Theoretical debate on travelling ideas in Southeast Europe
