TESI is an operational tool of the "Fondazione Internazionale Trieste" to:

• stimulate innovative proposals for the events that will forerun Trieste ESOF 2020 during the years 2018-2020 and the events that will take place during the ESOF 2020 week
• contact and activate contributors with special regard to the "Triveneto" Italian and the enlarged "Central Eastern European" areas

The TESI Local Programme Committee is in charge to promote and guide the development of the programme for the 2018-2020 events and it is preparing a call for proposals that aims to collect ideas and support the development of initiatives which will enhance dissemination, education, networking and training from now until ESOF 2020.

In detail the call will concern:

- PROESOF events 2018 - 2020 to be held preferentially in the North East of Italy and the Central Eastern European areas

- draft proposals to be refined for the official call of ESOF 2020 Trieste (that will open in January 2019)

- Science in the City Festival, to be held in Trieste and the Region during three weeks from June 27 to July 18, 2020.

These initiatives reflect the main objectives of ESOF2020 Trieste, whose main legacy is:

·        a permanent network of interactions among Research Institutions, Industry, Policy and Society in the enlarged Eastern and Central European Area;

·         the realization of a Science Center of excellence for technology and Innovation and for scientific dissemination shall be achieved in the "Porto Vecchio", the old harbour of Trieste which was for decades the commercial port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now is an extraordinary architectural and industrial heritage that Trieste Municipality is recovering;

·         the Network will foster inclusion and integration of Eastern Central European Countries and constitute a strong facilitator in the Adriatic Danubian macro-region, also for the connection with the Chinese Road.

Background information and contact details

The EuroScience Open Forum 2020 will be hosted from 4 to 10 July 2020 in Trieste, Italy. The FIT - Trieste International Foundation for Progress and Freedom will be in charge of the event. The Science and Innovation System of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia (SIS FVG), connecting the most relevant scientific institutions of the region, is collaborating with FIT to build up the scientific program of the 2020 event. As a Central European city, Trieste will work to make ESOF 2020 an opportunity for strengthening links with Central and Eastern European scientists, businesses, politicians and citizens.

With the motto Trieste introduced a new concept of ESOF 2020, that of opening up the largest Open Forum on Science in Europe outside the national borders of the hosting city. The proposed program PROESOF, which will take place before ESOF, aims at a strong involvement of Central Eastern Countries. The motto “Freedom for Science, Science for Freedom”, meaning a science free from prejudice and a science, which is also peace carrier, will be transversal to all the ESOF event of 2020. PROESOF will take place in different locations with a strong engagement of local Institutions, authorities and citizens.
