Iliana Ivanova was appointed as new European Commissioner

The European Council appointed Iliana Ivanova (Bulgaria) as new European Commissioner on 13 September 2023, by common accord with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The appointment follows the resignation of Mariya Gabriel as Commissioner and is for the remainder of the term of office of the Commission, which runs until 31 October 2024.

Iliana Ivanova has been appointed as the new European Commissioner for research, innovation, education, culture and youth. Her portfolio is quite wide and her appointment comes at a crucial time as the EU's flagship programmes, such as Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ are undergoing midterm eveluation, which means that shaping of the next generations programmes will start soon. Iliana has already said that one of her key priorities is to ensure stability in research and innovation funding, as well as continuing the work of her predecessor of supporting the widening countries, with the aim of closing the innovation divide present in Europe.
