News archive - Third Austrian Council Presidency - RTI priorities

Starting on 1 July 2018, Austria is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) for the next six months.

It is the third Austrian Council Presidency after 1998 and 2006. Information on all aspects of the Austrian Council Presidency are available on the official Presidency website eu2018.at.

In the field of research, technology and innovation, Austria has three Presidency priorities:

  • Negotiations on Horizon Europe, the 9th EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation
  • Council Conclusions on ERA, building on the ERAC Review of the ERA Advisory Structure
  • Support for Sectoral Policies (e.g.: Defence Research, Joint Undertaking High Performance Computing, European Open Science Cloud, European University Networks Initiative etc.).

ERA Portal Austria provides information and news on the three priorities as well as on the 40 Presidency RTI events supporting them, and on the formal meetings at ministerial level. In addition, with the "Austrian Presidency Preview for RTI", ERA Portal News subscribers will receive a separate weekly outlook on upcoming Presidency events during the following week.

A short film called “Advance Europe. Together” illustrates Austria's aspirations during its Council Presidency through the dynamic of an orchestra, where a conductor and a group of talented musicians fuse their individual instruments to a single voice. The film cuts between the orchestra and key areas of research, showing researchers from all over Europe in the course of their everyday activities, jointly exploring innovative solutions. Together the scenes illustrate the close harmony of research, education, technology and innovation, the key message for the Austrian Council Presidency in the field of RTI: “Let’s advance Europe. Together.”

Austria has also prepared a booklet for its EU Council Presidency in RTI: Under the heading "Stronger Together: Whole-of-government Approach to Research, Technology & Innovation (RTI) in Austria", the booklet provides an overview of how the Austrian government pays tribute to a "whole-of-government" approach by presenting examples of knowledge-intensive policies in Austria as evidence of good practice.
